Attend a Clinic

Saturday, March 21st

(Sunday, March 22nd is canceled)

Burberry Gates Farm, St Charles, IL

As an animal behaviorist and seasoned equestrian performer and trainer, I am a firm believer that many trainers in the horse world make horsemanship too complicated. In this clinic we start in the classroom and break down equine cognition and ethology paired with operant and classical conditioning to simplify our understanding of working with horses. We then get into the actual execution of these methods with group work and afternoon one on one individual sessions. This is very much a "teach a man to fish" clinic so participants and auditors can walk away with a fresh perspective and prepared tool kit, ready to handle any situation with your horse. You will also have so many things to work on and know the formula to proceed on your own and think like a trainer!

Saturday is a full day clinic. Haul in with your horse! On-site day stall usage is included. Please bring your own buckets, hay, and shavings and clean out your area before you leave. Auditors are welcome as this clinic is classroom heavy so there is still much to learn without having your own horse present. Lunch will be catered and provided for participants and auditors! Our mornings start with classroom lectures, educational games, and group work in the arena and our afternoons break into private sessions where participants are encouraged to audit one another while awaiting their turn or after taking their turn.

Burberry Gates Farm has ample trailer parking and a heated lounge and indoor arena. There is no better place and time to attend this type of clinic. Perfect for beginners and advanced horsemen alike. Please dress accordingly, bring a halter and line, some sort of training stick/tool, and some treats. Sign with provided link. Spots are first come, first serve!

Interested in Hosting?

  • Interested in hosting a clinic? Great! Survey your community/group/facility to see what discipline(s) and time frame would gain the most interest for your event. Once you know when and what you would like to book, fill out the form below and Veronica will reach out to further discuss options.

  • Together you and your host facility will partner with Veronica of Horsemanship Unlocked to put on a fun and educational event. Veronica will show up and teach with equipment needed and the host will handle the registration and advertising of the event. Due to being more familiar with your local community, it is the host’s responsibility to spread the word and facilitate sign up. Veronica will also share any advertising made on her newsletters, website, and social media accounts. When more auditors and participants sign up, more profit will be made for both the host and the clinician. It is important to try to gain a scope of interest and commitment before booking with Horsemanship Unlocked to avoid cancellations or reschedules.

  • A safe stabling and riding facility to host a clinic, an arena suitable to host an event (preferably covered for weather implications), a round pen for liberty or an arena that can be split, bathrooms, room for guests participants, and stabling for potential participant horses and their parking needs. You may set any haul-in or stabling fees or limitations as you would like (who will provide hay, bedding, etc.).

It is up to the host whether they would like to include a lunch for the participants. Some facilities advise participants to bring their own lunches, some hosts include a catered lunch, and some organize group potlucks.

  • There are no up front costs for booking a Horsemanship Unlocked clinic. Any clinic will run when minimum earnings are met ($1000 for Horsemanship Unlocked per day). Income will be split into thirds; 1/3 for the host and 2/3 for Horsemanship Unlocked. If minimum is not met by a specific date, the event will get canceled or rescheduled. There will be an additional travel and board fee calculated per event and a lunch included on work days for the clinician and potential assistant. Agreements also include 1 spot in the clinic for the host. Any additional spots taken by the host party will be deducted from their portion of earnings.

As for participants and auditors, prices vary depending upon location. Hosts are to research similar offerings in their area and set competitive rates. Hosts are responsible for collecting payment and upholding cancelation policies with participants.

  • Horsemanship Unlocked has premade group clinics that can be mixed and matched to customize your event.

  • Q: Is Horsemanship Unlocked insured?

A: Absolutely! All riders must also sign an online waiver at www.horsemanshipunlocked.com prior to participating in any event. Minors are required to wear helmets for mounted activities.

Q: Do you have to have your own horse?

A: Yes. Veronica no longer travels with her horses. Clinics are focused on training you and your horse to accomplish spectacular things. Veronica’s trick riding horses are available for use during the warm months onsite in Wisconsin for private lessons and group events. Veronica will meet you and your horse where you are at based on experience level and safety.

Q: Do you need your own equipment?

A: Yes, however Veronica does have specialty equipment that can be borrowed for your event such as trick riding saddles, a practice barrel, vaulting equipment, roman riding pads, practice lances and swords, and rings for practice. All of which can be arranged for shipment or checked luggage depending on the travel requests.

Q: How far will Veronica travel?

A: Anywhere! It’s easy to hop in the car or to catch a flight. Veronica is based in the Midwest however she has performed these clinics coast to coast. Extra travel arrangements may need to be made for flights. Veronica is open to stay in a guest room on sight or in a nearby hotel.

Q: What previous experience does one need to participate in a clinic?

A: None! Veronica can teach any rider at any age. Horses on the other hand will be the limiting factor. Any horse at any level can benefit and progress their training during the clinic. Veronica will meet horses where they are and adapt curriculum for safety purposes.

Q: Are participants limited to one horse and one rider?

A: No, horses can be shared if adequate breaks are given. For the trick riding or jousting clinics, we ask that a team of 2 humans (1 rider and 1 handler/lunger who will switch turns) work with 1 horse (max 8 people & 4 horses). For groundwork, trick training, and liberty there is a max participation of 8 horses and 8 humans.
